An outsider's perspective on Brazil - O olhar de uma gringa sobre o Brasil

« The Jeitinho | | All about the benjamins »

Yesterday, I forcibly dragged Eli Eli and I headed over to the Museum of Modern Art to check out the new exhibit, a huge exposition by Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist who lives in New York. Though the other current exhibit, a celebration of the sixtieth birthday of the museum, is OK, this exhibit blows out it of the water. The museum was filled to the brim with well-heeled Cariocas, preppy gay men, and artist types, which I imagine it will be for the next week or so.

Vik Muniz was born in 1961 and grew up in a working class family in Sao Paulo. He moved to New York in the 1980s, when he began his career. He is best known for creating works of art out of unusual materials, and then photographing them. This exhibit features photographs of many of his most popularseries, which use sugar, pasta, peanut butter and jelly, ketchup, chocolate syrup, trash, diamonds, caviar, junk, magazine scraps, pigment, old computers, flowers, toy soldiers, plastic bugs, puzzle pieces, and cotton to create amazing original portraits, as well as replicas of famous paintings and photographs.

What I love about Vik, besides his evident social conscience, is his unbelievable creative genius, the ability to take something totally inane, like ketchup, and turn it into a work of art. He also takes things that are ugly and undesirable and makes them beautiful. I also loved to see his vision, a combination of Brazilian ingenuity and American pragmatism and perfectionism. Though many of his works feature American or European themes or images, his style is undeniably Brazilian, one of unique fusion. My favorite pieces, which absolutelybowled me over, were Medusa Marinara , Mona Lisa in PB J , VIDA Tote Bag 1111 DRAGON TOTE by VIDA KZ8CP
, and Monet'sLa Japonaise in pigment . Oddly, though, the piece that most affected me was two American flags made from flowers and plants: one, green and in full bloom, the other brown and decaying. Though I'm pretty sure this wasn't his intention, it reminded me of the transition the USis undergoing, moving from despair to hope, from decadence to prosperity.

My only complaint about the exhibit was the organization, which didn't allow for a smooth or clear viewing order. Eli's complaint was that one of the chocolate syrup pieces, a two-set replica of The Raft of the Medusa, was ordered incorrectly. The museum employees on hand insisted the photos were in the correct order, but he's determined they're backwards. It was one of the least clearly drawn pieces in the exhibit,so I couldn't really tell.

The exhibit runs through March 8th at MAM Rio, but you can still enjoy Vik's work even if you're not in Rio.He has exhibits currently running in New York and Japan, and the Rio exhibit is moving to Sao Paulo in March. You can check out tons of Vik's workson his VIDA Foldaway Tote Confetti by VIDA jiYgIf

My first introduction to modern art was as a 12-year-old going to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and seeing a piece entitled something like "After the Apocalypse," which was a blank canvas save for some black splotches in the upper right-hand corner. I've given the genre numerous chances over the years, including going to MOMA in NYC over the Christmas holidays, and it just reconfirmed my intense dislike of its pretentiousness and faux creativity. I mean, the Mona Lisa in PBJ? Maybe if it were done with sriracha and kochujang, I'd be impressed, but PBJ is just derivative.

For example, I had a list of specific measurable goals for where I thought I should be when I graduated engineering school. When I finally did and realized I didn’t meet any of my goals, I felt disappointed and started telling myself I was a failure. Of course, this behavior got me nowhere.

The most important thing I learned is to release my expectations about how I think my life should go and approach life from a place of exploration. This opens you up to experiencing things that are beyond your wildest dreams. It’s okay to have goals, but make sure to leave room for something even greater to come along.

Maybe the most peaceful and quickest way to achieve something is a way you haven't thought of yet. Be willing to go with the flow.

This requires trust. I learned that when I let go and trust I will receive everything I need, I always do. I often find myself saying at the end of the day, “Wow, this day was amazing and I had no plan, yet I accomplished everything I needed to.”

Explore through life knowing deep down that you are always guided to exactly where you need to be. Plus, doesn't exploring sound like more fun than expecting?

A lot of us want external things because of the way we think they will make us feel. I wanted a skinnier body because I thought it would make me feel happy and loved. I wanted a successful career because I thought I would feel fulfilled. I wanted a relationship because I thought it would relieve my loneliness.

These things can distract us from looking within ourselves for answers .

When they fail to do what we want, we feel disappointed and angry. In order to release this cycle of disappointment, we need to release the belief that they will save us.

If you want to experience more love , start giving more love. If you don't want to feel lonely, then start healing the belief that you are alone. If you want to feel like you're worth something, start treating yourself like you are worth something, because you most definitely are.

When you heal the beliefs that run wild in your mind, you can still enjoy the externals, but you're no longer trying to get something from them. You know you're already fulfilled, happy, and complete, so if your circumstances change, you can maintain your joy.

I’ve learned that the loving voice within, also known as our inner guide, has a bigger plan for us than we have for ourselves. I don't know about you, but I want that plan!

Sangre De Muerdago To Bring The Ancient Beauty of Galician Culture To Roadburn 2018

The region of Galicia , in north-western Spain , has an incredibly rich culture that will make the delights of anyone who decides to discover more of it. Though it might not the most hip tourist destination, this autonomous community with its own language ( Galician , closely related to the neighbouring Portuguese ) has a vivid and intense history dating back to prehistoric times, full of important episodes, fairytales and evocative nature.

We naturally encourage you to go and experience this unique atmosphere by yourself, but for a faithful representation of the Galician spirit, you could also go see VIDA Leather Statement Clutch Blue Leaves by VIDA NyRZah
at Roadburn 2018 . The band led by , musician and lyricist who has also done work in painting and sculpture, is deeply connected to the very earth of their homeland – with a background in Spanish punk and other kinds of countercultural movements (these guys have been founders and songwriters of bands such as Ekkaia , ColdWorld and Antlers among others), Sangre De Muerdago is the vehicle through which these musicians leave the harshness and aggression aside and channel the folk tales of Galicia through traditional instruments and gentle, haunting, ancient-sounding singing.

Since 2010 , the band has steadily enriched their discographic output as well as their live performances, each time finding new tales to tell and new real and mythological places to visit with each of their songs. () is their latest release, an EP that recalls a time before human industry, before cities of concrete and steel, telling us about a little red fox that wandered the region and that liked to hear the melodies and the songs of nature itself. Equally ghostly and grounded as always, this seamless wandering between myth and history, magic and realism, reality and fantasy, between dreams and the here and now, is at the heart of the way in which Sangre De Muerdago – which translates as – transmit through music what it means to be Galician .

“I Pablo told us. We believe that wonderful reward is pretty much assured.

Sangre De Muerdago will bring a little bit of Galicia with them to Roadburn on Friday, April 20 at Het Patronaat.
